Apple uses its annual September event to unveil new watches, and the clock is set again this year with two new Watches: the revamped Series 10 in new sizes and the Ultra 3.

The Apple Watch isn't exactly 10 years old, but it's time for the Series 10. The Series 10 is thinner than previous Apple Watches, and that's a big change. Apple's watch has been exactly 10.7 millimeters thick since the Series 4 from 2018. And before that, it was a small millimeter more. Now, a millimeter has been taken off, and the Apple Watch 9.7 millimeters thick.

The Series 10 also comes in larger sizes. The smallest model is now 42 millimeters, up from 41 mm. And the larger model is now 46 millimeters, up from 45 mm.

That larger size mainly refers to the display, which is larger thanks to thinner bezels. The display on the largest Apple Watch Series 10 is even slightly larger than the display on the Apple Watch Ultra. The display is 30 percent larger than the display on previous Apple Watches.

Brighter screen with wider viewing angle

The screen itself has also been improved. The corners are more rounded. There is also an OLED screen with a larger viewing angle, which according to Apple can be read from more angles, and also in more light. Charging is also faster: in 30 minutes you can charge the watch to 80 percent.

In terms of physical dimensions, the new Apple Watches appear to be quite similar to the previous models. Despite the new sizes, existing straps can still be fitted, which is good news for enthusiasts who already have a whole collection.

From sleep apnea to surfing

On the health front, the Apple Watch Series 10 now has a sensor for sleep apnea. This is when you stop breathing during the night, which can be bad for your health but certainly not everyone notices at first. According to Apple, it goes undiagnosed in 80 percent of cases.

Apple uses the motion sensor to map interruptions in breathing. Once a month, it checks whether there are signs of sleep apnea. The algorithm was developed with machine learning and tested in a clinical environment, Apple says.

Sensors from the Apple Watch Ultra also make it to the new Series 10, including a depth sensor and water thermometer. Using Apple and third-party apps, users can then use the watch for snorkeling, surfing, and more.

AI should also be mentioned

The new S10-chip has an improved neural engine, for AI tasks. Apple mentions health functions, but also things like translation would benefit from the new chip. Furthermore, all existing functions would be faster on the Apple Watch.

In addition to the aluminum base model in silver, black and rose gold, there is now also a high-gloss version in titanium. That model replaces the high-gloss stainless steel model, and is also available in silver, dark gray and gold. The new Apple Watches are lighter in both aluminum and titanium than their predecessors: 10 percent for aluminum, 40 percent for titanium, compared to stainless steel.

Prices

The Apple Watch Series 10 is available in the Netherlands from 449 euros for the aluminum version and from 799 euros for the titanium edition. The new Apple Watches are available from September 20.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 now also in black

The Apple Watch Ultra has been renewed, looks largely the same but is now also available in a black version. There is also now a matching Milanese strap for the Ultra, so that a less sporty strap can also fit that watch well.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available from 899 euros.
